Additional Racist Depictions of Black & Brown-Skinned Characters in Anime, Manga & Manhwa...

Remember this image from one of my other posts (Carole & Tuesday) ?

Yeah?

Well, I'm going to continue in this vein by showing you a few other animes, mangas or manwhas that also have this type of racism (or other discernable racist stereotypes) ingrained in their imagery.

Commentary will be minimal this time. We'll take a Title-Caption-Picture pattern, ok?

OOKAMI NO MONSHOU (Manga)

Note the dark skin and bright, colorless rim for a mouth.

THE GOD OF HIGH SCHOOL (Manwha & Anime)

Note the pointed head that alludes to a sagittal crest (one of the defining features of hominid apes), the dark skin and bright, pale rim for a mouth.

ROBOTECH (Anime)

Note the brown skin and bright rim for a mouth.

SHAMON KING (Anime)

Note the brown skin and rim for a mouth. And look, he even has a banana.

MITCHIKO TO HACHIN (Anime)

Note the brown skin and bright rim for a mouth.

DARKER THAN BLACK (Anime)

Note the brown skin and bright rim for a mouth.

BINBOGAMI GA! (Anime)

Note the brown skin and bright rim for a mouth.

CYBORG 008 (Anime)

Note the brown skin and bright rim for a mouth.

TENJOU TENGE (Anime)

Note the brown skin and bright rim for a mouth.

NEON GENESIS: EVANGELION (Anime)

Note the dark skin and bright, colorless rim for a mouth.

HUNTER X HUNTER (Anime)

Note the dark skin and bright rim for a mouth.

DRAGON BALL Z (Anime)

They thought they were slick because they put a turban on him. Note the black skin and bright, colorless rim for a mouth.

Here's another one from Dragon Ball Z... This character is named "Killa". Note the dark skin and the bright rim mouth.

HELLSING (Anime)

This one's a little more subtle: They make this character (Jan Valentine), brown-skinned and lewd (stereotype for African/Black men). They even have the gall to have him wearing a bandana (the gangster stereotype for Black men) AND put an adinkra (Ghanaian, west African) symbol (the "love eye") on that bandana. (Putting the adinkra symbol on the bandana is a microaggression because it is a misuse of the symbol, and, noting that the gangster stereotype for Black men is false, it is an attempt to homogenize and obscure the distinct cultural identities of the west Africans that use adinkra symbols.)

Here's another one from Hellsing: They modeled this character (called Incognito) using africanisms (tribal mark imitations, jewelry style imitations) and African features (phenotype of the nose and mouth). He's hardly wearing any clothes. As you can see, chains are a part of his accessories.

Way to hail slavery.

Here's the kicker, according to the anime, he's from the "Dark Continent".

*Eye roll*

POKEMON (Anime)

Note the dark (purple) skin and bright rim for a mouth. The name? Jynx.

ONE PUNCH MAN (Anime)

Note the dark skin, and bright rim for a mouth.

ONE PIECE (Anime)

Note the hair drawn in a style that indicates kinkiness. (Only African/Black hair is kinky.) Also, note the usual bright rim for a mouth.

DURARARA (Anime)

Note the dark skin and bright rim for a mouth.

DANKICHI ON A TROPICAL ISLAND (Anime)

Note the black skin, and the monkey-like appearance in this anime from 1934. Also, note the usual bright rim for a mouth.

LOVE LAB (Anime)

Note the brown skin. Also, note the usual bright rim for a mouth.

RED RIBBON ARMY (Anime)

Note the dark brown skin and usual bright rim for a mouth on this character (called "Commander Black").

SAKURA WARS (Anime)

This character (Cheiron Archer) is a bit more modern, but note the brown skin and usual bright rim for a mouth.

Soooo...

See a pattern yet?

(By the way, this is not an all-inclusive list.)
